Let's say you have a trail map in PDF format, such as this: ... 0of%20(DEP)/attachments/41081santa_teresa.pdf

And you want to get it onto pathaway as a calibrated map.
The semi-easy way I found to do this was:

1) Change the map from a PDF into a jpg or png image.
I use PDFCreator to print the image from PDF to png file

2) Launch Google Earth and find the park on the screen

3) Choose "add -> Image overlay" then choose the map image file.

4) adjust the image and it's transparency on Google earth to align properly on the screen (use main roads/trails to align)

5) Use the "Add Placement" thumbtacks in Google earth to pinpoint the topleft and bottom right corners (and other corners too if you wish)

6) Use the coordinates from the thumbtacks in Pathaways Map Manager during the calibration phase of your original Trail image file.
If anyone finds an easier method, (or needs more description of the above) here.
